There are a number of different dental insurance options out there, and many patients simply accept whatever plan their employers provide. However, it is easier than ever for people to find their own dental insurance coverage that means their unique needs. If you’re shopping for dental insurance, read this blog to learn more about the types of dental insurance plans that are available.
1 – PPO Dental Insurance Plans
PPO stands for preferred provider organization. This is a popular option because these plans allow patients the flexibility to choose the dentist and treatments they want. The plans have set treatments that they cover, set fees they consider fair and certain in-network providers who can ensure patients receive the maximum insurance coverage. However, patients can choose out of network providers or not covered materials or procedures. They will simply need to pay any differences in the plan’s set fees and the treatment costs charged by the out of network practice.
2 – HMO Dental Insurance Plans
HMO stands for health maintenance organization. They are usually cheaper than PPO plans, but unlike these more flexible plans, HMOs are known to inflict stringent coverage restrictions on patients including what dental offices they can visit and what treatments and material can be provided.
3 – Dental Indemnity Insurance Plans
These are typically purchased by a group not individuals, but some insurance companies do make these plans available for individuals to purchase. They are beneficial for patients who need a higher than usual annual maximum benefit due to a need for advanced restorative or orthodontic treatments. Unlike traditional insurance plans that cover part of the cost of dental care at the time of treatment, dental indemnity plans require patients to cover the full price of treatment out of pocket. Then, they will need to a file a claim and receive reimbursement.
4 – Dental Savings Plans
Some dental offices offer practice-specific dental savings plan. These plans require patients to pay a pre-set fee each year. This annual fee typically covers the costs of their preventive dental treatments as well as a small percentage of the costs of other treatments.
